The more the poor the more the suicide

Are you a loanee, failing to pay off your debt? Those who are anti-govt are trying to take personal loan even though they are not getting that loan easily on demand. This informal transaction has probably come down to naught. Have you seen any news item on the personal loan in the print or electronic media in Bangladesh? Probably not because traditional way of covering the news of the business barons and political cronies has dogged the profession, putting an end to its greatness once it had and should have. It is very usual that people belonging opposition camps live penury at least this time it is true for the honest professionals because of price spiral. And those used to live on the political leftover of the then ruling party are also not only politically but also economically unless he or she belongs to the fortunate 15 to 20 thousand cronies whom BNP allowed to be crorepatis. This time a Bangladeshi banker failing to pay off debt found him on the top of the suicide list. Thirty-five-year old Majharul Haque lost huge amount of money and was a loan defaulter at Arab Bangladesh Bank, said manager Habibur Rahman of the same bank. He could have risen to the position of ‘crorepati’ like the businesses of the country who like the Indian and Pakistani crorepaties are amassing huge amount of money albeit by defaulting. Had our over thirty thousand crorepatis sense as much as of Majharul they would have taken their lives soon after they had become millionaire. Just out of the shame of being a loan defaulter Majharul took his life on December 23 just two days before Farhan Abdul Latif, the seventh suicide victim of Guantanamo Bay prison, took his life when the later saw no light of justice at the end of the 11 years in prison. Obama wanted to seal the Gitmo prison of 160 inmates condemned without trial, on the eve of his second time in White House he is yet to turn up though.

Fourteen-year-old Srabonti Akhter Pinky is one of those 110 girls who committed suicide in last 47 months. In human rights watchdog Odhikar’s report revealed in 2012 that in the same period 5281 women, children were victims of dowry, rape and acid throwing. Pinky, a JSC examinee, took her life in December. Srabonti was abducted by Ronnie on November 28, and eventually rescued by the police. While Ronnie was sent to jail and then denied bail, his family went to Srabonti’s house and insulted her which, according to her father, may have prompted her to commit suicide.
Earlier this year, Aleya Akhtar Smriti was hacked to death by one Ismail Hossain who had been harassing her for a while. The death of a Natore College teacher, who had protested at harassment of his students, and the killing of a woman by her daughters’ stalker, both around the same time in 2010, reflect a rise in not only the rate but the ferocity of the stalkers. Furthermore, it is a matter of grave concern that the stalkers are now going beyond their immediate victims and targeting anyone who stands up against the culprits.
The government should implement strict laws and hold accountable any persons responsible for harassing, abducting, raping, killing, etc women. The judges can come up to issue suo moto rule in aid of the media to contain the crime against humanity.
